The Director
Clara Ott. Born in Paris
in 1965, Clara Ott studied music (piano) and cinema until
1985 when she entered IDHEC/FEMIS, the Institute of Advanced
Cinema Studies/ European Foundation of Professional Image
and Sound.
For three years, she directed various films including
the 16mm documentary "Ardoisière", which
was shown in various student film festivals across Europe,
and a poetic fiction on 35mm B&W on the composer Robert
Schumann, "Les chants de l’ombre" (Songs
of the Shadow). This film was chosen by the Creteil Festival
of Women’s Films and won the Best Romantic Short
prize at the Cabourg Festival in 1989, and the audience’s
prize at Blois in 1990 (distributed on cable, Paris premiere).
From 1989 to 1994, she devoted herself essentially to
editing full-length films and worked on features such
as "Urga" by Nikita Mikhalkov, and "Farinelli"
by Gerard Corbiau.
In 1995 and 1996, she was an employee at l'Académie
de France à Rome Villa Médicis (cinema section)
where she wrote the script for a full-length documentary/feature
on the last years of the life of Franz Liszt "Nuages
gris", Grey Clouds, (selected for presentation at
the La Ciotat Screenwriters Festival, 1999).
On her return to Paris, she worked principally on editing
documentaries, and pursued the writing and directing of
fiction and documentary projects. She directed and showed
"Festin pour douze percussionnistes" in 2000
and 2001 (Aix en Provence Festival 2001, city of music
and Prague Festival in 2002).
Since 2002, she has travelled regularly to Albania to
exhibit her photographs of the street children, and to
the publication of a book of photographs to increase awareness
of child trafficking victims (published by Ilo/Ipec).
She will finish "Childhood for sale, Stories from
Albania" in Autumn 2004.
